The Southern Center
has a regular faculty of five, plus numerous guest lecturers.
President
, founder and President of The Southern Center for International Studies, graduated from Fordham University, attended the Academy of International Law at The Hague and the National War College. Mr. White has over thirty years of experience in international programming, and also advises a number of governors, university, and state government officials and corporations. Mr. White is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations in New York, the Atlanta Rotary Club, and is on the Board of Visitors of the CDC Foundation. He regularly contributes articles relating to U.S. foreign policy issues to newspapers and periodicals. He has traveled extensively in Asia, Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and Africa.
Vice-Presidents
, Vice President and Director of Programming, Cedric Suzman has been associated with the Center since its inception in 1977 and was elected to the Board of Trustees in January 1988. He was an Associate Professor in the College of Management, Georgia Institute of Technology from 1974-1977. Dr. Suzman received a BS (Engineering) degree from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and his MBA and DBA degrees from the Harvard Business School. He has edited and authored a number of publications on foreign investment in the Southeastern United States, on export management, and on strategic planning. He has lectured on international business, marketing, and strategic planning topics for executive management courses, including the Emory University Executive and Evening MBA programs, the University of Pittsburgh Management Program for Executives, and the University of Michigan International Marketing Management seminar. Dr. Suzman has lived in Atlanta since 1974 and has participated in numerous community activities. He is on the Board of Trustees of the Atlanta Chapter of the American Jewish Committee, the Advisory Board of the Georgia Tech Center for Business Education and Research (GT CIBER), the Advisory Board of the European Union Center of the University System of Georgia, and the International Affairs Advisory Board at Kennesaw State University. He is also on the Advisory Council of the International Community School.
, Vice President & Legal Counsel, Ms. White is Co-Founder and Vice President of the Southern Center for International Studies. She is the producer of its Peabody Award-winning television programs. In this capacity, she has convened more than 50 conferences with the former U.S. Secretaries of State, Defense, Treasury, Education and Health; ambassadors to the UN; and world leaders. She is the project director and producer of the Center’s multimedia educational series, World in Transition. This series is being used by 38,000 high school educators throughout the United States, and is also part of the core curriculum of the university-based, Air Force Reserve Officer Training program. Ms. White is a member of the Women’s Foreign Policy Group in Washington DC and she was appointed by Secretary of Defense William Cohen to serve on the Pentagon’s Defense Advisory Committee on The Role of Women in the Services. Ms. White is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, New York, and the Georgia State Defense Force. She holds a J.D. and MBA from Emory University. She has also received certification from the Free University of Brussels, and The Hague Academy of International Law. Ms. White is a Trustee of the Halle Foundation. She is the mother of five adult sons.
Research Director
The Research Director acts as the head of the school
and director of the Southern Center’s Research Department.
S/He works with the Library Research Director and Associate Research
Library Director in managing the library’s research agenda
as well as teaching and supervising the student-interns. As author
of the essays in the Center’s World in Transition series
of educational materials, the Research Director oversees the research
for the educational materials in cooperation with everyone involved.
S/He also oversees the research and writing of the scripts for the
televised conferences.
, Research Director, received his Ph.D. in political
science from the University of Georgia and occasionally teaches
at Georgia State University (graduate and undergraduate levels).
He is editor and/or co-author of eight Southern Center publications
in the World in Transition
multimedia educational series (Latin America in Transition,
East Asia in Transition, Russia and the Other Former
Soviet Republics in Transition, The End of the Soviet Union
(2nd ed.), Africa in Transition, Europe in Transition,
Regional Studies Reader, and Middle East in Transition
(2nd ed.). This series is used in high school classrooms across
the United States, and has been adapted for use in colleges, corporate
training sessions, and Air Force ROTC training. In 2003, the “World
in Transition” series was named a flagship program of the
World Affairs Councils of America. Brown is currently working on
the Southern Center’s newest publication, South Asia in
Transition. He also writes essays on a variety of international
topics for the SCIS Web site and local publications.
Brown has been Conference Research Director for
over 20 Peabody-award winning television specials featuring former
U.S. Secretaries of State, Defense, and other world leaders. These
specials air across the United States on Public Broadcasting Stations
(PBS). His international experience includes serving as an election
monitor for the 1990 Nicaraguan elections, serving as a research
associate for the Centro de Investigacion para el Desarrollo in
Mexico City, Mexico, and interning for the United Nations Center
for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs in Vienna, Austria.
In 2004, he participated in a faculty study trip to India sponsored
by the Halle Institute of Global Cultural Learning at Emory University,
as well as a leadership mission to Taiwan sponsored by the World
Affairs Councils of America. He has participated in numerous conferences
in the United States and Europe. He and his wife Juliet live in
Atlanta, Georgia.
Research
Library Director
The Research
Library Director serves as head of the Research Library and coordinator
of the Student-Internship Program. S/he acts as one of the main
teachers and supervisors of the student-interns in the Research
Library. The Research Library Director receives research requests
from the Southern Center’s various departments and is responsible
for implementing this research agenda by delegating assignments,
reviewing the research to ensure high quality, and managing the
daily operations of the Library. The Research Library Director is
also responsible for coordinating teamwork and instructing the student-interns
in the focus, content, and style of their research.
The Research
Library Director serves on the Southern Center’s editorial
board and is co-author of various publications in the World in Transition
series of educational materials. S/He also supervises the research
and writing of the scripts for the televised conferences, and serves
as guest lecturer at the Southern Center’s teacher training
workshops.
The Research
Library Director, along with the Associate Library Director, presides
over a weekly discussion group of all the student-interns, as well
as less formal discussions throughout the week. It is also the Research
Library Director’s responsibility to make sure that the student-interns
are gaining an understanding of their diverse subject matter, and
to provide feedback on how successful they have been in their efforts.
, Research Library Director, graduated from the State College of Foreign Languages in Warsaw, Poland, where she studied Foreign Trade in English and Russian. She also attended the school of Slovak language and culture, Studia Academica Slovakia, in Bratislava, Slovakia. For several years, she worked for the Polish Writers’ Association in Warsaw. She has published several reviews of English books, translations of poems and short stories in Polish newspapers and magazines. Later, she worked as a freelance translator in cooperation with the Translation Bureau "Lidex" in Warsaw. After immigrating to the United States and settling in Atlanta, she pursued a BIS in International Studies at Georgia State University, where she was awarded the Suzanne Wakefield Bargeron Scholarship for a commitment to scholarship and international understanding. She also completed a Certificate of European Union Studies, through a program of the University System of Georgia’s European Council. She is the author of the Southern Center’s timelines of international events and a co-author of some of the Southern Center’s World In Transition online updates.
Senior Academic Fellows
The Center has
appointed eminent scholars who contribute to SCIS courses, lectures
and publications on a regular basis.
