College Student-Interns

The College Student-Internship is a 15-week (one academic semester) internship. The Southern Center admits two to three College Student-Interns each semester (Fall, Spring, and Summer). They are required to devote between 20 and 40 hours per week during a single academic term. The student-internship is voluntary. Some universities grant academic credit for this internship.

The specific course of study carried out by College Student-Interns includes:

  • preparing and updating information packages on specific countries, as well as international issues and organizations,
  • preparing background briefs for upcoming programs,
  • helping to update the information on the Center's Web site, including links to other news sources, a timeline of current events, and updates for the educational packages,
  • assisting in the background research for the regional educational packages in the Southern Center's World in Transition series,
  • assisting in the background research for the Southern Center's Peabody award-winning, televised conferences,
  • attending and participating in the Center's local programming; on occasion assisting in the production of these programs,
  • attending and participating in the Center's regular courses.

To qualify for the College Student-Internship, students must be currently enrolled as juniors, seniors, or in master’s programs in an accredited college or university. Strong candidates will be pursuing a course of study in international affairs or a related field, will have excellent writing and computer skills, and will be able to perform detail-oriented work. Candidates should have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
