The Southern Center for International Studies and The Cato Institute present Ted Galen Carpenter, Vice President for Defense and Foreign Policy Studies at the Cato Institute and Sandra Mackey, author of seven books on the Middle East. Watch this program.

The Cato Institute is a non-profit public policy research foundation headquartered in Washington, D.C. Its mission is to broaden the parameters of public policy debate to allow consideration of the traditional American principles of limited government, individual liberty, free markets and peace. Toward that goal, the Institute strives to achieve greater involvement of the intelligent, concerned lay public in questions of policy and the proper role of government.

Ted Galen Carpenter is vice president for defense and Foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute. He is the author of seven and the editor of 10 books on international affairs, including America's Coming War with China: A Collision Course over Taiwan, The Korean Conundrum: America's Troubled Relations with North and South Korea, Bad Neighbor Policy: Washington's Futile War on Drugs in Latin America, The Captive Press: Foreign Policy Crises and the First Amendment, Beyond NATO: Staying Out of Europe's Wars, and A Search for Enemies: America's Alliances after the Cold War. Carpenter is contributing editor to the National Interest and serves on the editorial boards of Mediterranean Quarterly and the Journal of Strategic Studies, and is the author of more than 350 articles and policy studies. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Los Angeles Times, the Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy, the National Interest, World Policy Journal, aand many other publications. He is a frequent guest on radio and television programs in the United States, Latin America, Europe, East Asia, and other regions. Carpenter received his Ph.D. in U.S. diplomatic history from the University of Texas.

Sandra Mackey is a freelance writer specializing in the Middle East. She spent four years in a Saudi Arabia working as a journalist reporting on Saudi politics, economic, military affairs, and the society. Her articles have appeared in the Los Angels Times, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, the Christian Science Monitor, The Chicago Tribune, the International Herald Tribune, and the Washington Quarterly of the Georgetown Center for Strategic Studies as well as other publications. Her books include The Saudis: Inside the Desert Kingdom (1987); Lebanon: Death of a Nation, which was named to The New York Times list of “Notable Books of 1989”; Passion and Politics: The Turbulent World of the Arabs, published in the U.S. (1992) and in Germany (1995); The Iranians: Persia, Islam and the Soul of a Nation (1996); The Reckoning: Iraq and the Legacy of Saddam Hussein (2002); and Lebanon: A House Divided (2006). Her most recent book Mirror of the Arab World: Lebanon in Conflict, will be published W.W. Norton in January 2008.

Ms. Mackey is a frequent guest on CNN and has also appeared as a commentator on Middle East events on Nightline, ABC Evening News with Peter Jennings, BBC, CBC, National Public Radio, Monitor Radio as well as many other media outlets.

A live webcast and Q&A with The Honorable Thomas J. Christensen, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs with responsibility for China, Taiwan, and Mongolia. Moderated by Stephen A. Orlins, President, National Committee on U.S. – China Relations.

A local panel discussion and Q&A featuring experts on China followed. Featured Panel Participants: Amy Celico, Senior Director of the Office of China Affairs Office of the U.S. Trade Representative; Jeff Pearse, Marketing Director Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport; and Mark Sobolewski, Vice President of International Strategy United Parcel Service.
